Footage shows a dine-and-dash family of four walking out of the restaurant without paying the bill
A family restaurant has pleaded with a group of diners to come back and settle their £60 bill after they allegedly made a runner while staff were distracted. The crafty family of four can be seen on CCTV footage sneaking out of an Italian restaurant as the team prepare their desert on Saturday night. The unidentified man and woman were first seen checking out filming equipment before tucking into a £60 dinner with their two children. But a CCTV camera later caught them fleeing from Vito’s in Sheffield, South Yorks., after ordering deserters to distract unsuspecting staff. Chef Vito Ciaraolo, 59, who has run the classic Italian restaurant for 32 years, said it was “frustrating” that they had pulled the evil trick from his restaurant next door. And he said that the couple set a bad example for the children, who fled with the woman a few minutes before the man went out the door behind them. He said: “It’s very frustrating. You can imagine what I would do if I were caught by them. But there was nothing I could do. “The waiter made an order in the kitchen. She said that they ordered three deserts but the children and the woman were left, and it was only the man in the restaurant. “I said to the waiter ‘Go upstairs. I think they are going to do a runner.’ “I realized they were up to something. But by the time she went upstairs, one minute later, they were gone.” The family arrived at Vito’s restaurant at 6pm on Sunday (April 23) and ordered olives, then three pizzas and an aubergine dish as main courses, fruit juice and three soft drinks, racking up a bill of £60.95. they finished their mains, CCTV footage shows the woman – dressed in black – standing up from her seat and ushering the children away from the table.. The man, in a blue t-shirt, then orders deserts before dashing off and the waiter avoiding. he said the staff didn’t know the family, who chose to sit at a table near the door before they started making their orders. He said: “They walked in. They were new to us, and the team said they had never seen them before.” They were looking around to see if there were any cameras. But they didn’t see one of the cameras, which is very high up. “They started with some appetizers, some olives, and then they were three pizzas and Parmigiana Melanzane, they also had some soft drinks.” Vito said he was shocked to learn that the couple had shielded him from his premises without settling their bill. But he now believes from the way they acted that they may have done the same trick in other restaurants before. He added: “I think they’ve gone out to get food before and they did exactly the same thing they did to me. “That’s the impression I got. I think they do this all the time. “If someone comes to the restaurant and says there is no money, I can give you something to eat. It’s not a problem. “That’s the kind of person I am. I try to help everyone.” Vito said he has since received an outpouring of support from his regulars, adding that if the family coughed up the money for their bill he would donate it to a good cause. He said: “Everyone is disappointed by what happened. But they are very supportive. I have many beautiful customers. “I’ve been here 32 years and this is only the second time it’s happened. But if that man brings it back, I will give that money to charity.” Vito has not yet reported the matter to the police.
